Cooking this Mulled Wine Christmas Ham recipe has become one of our Christmas Eve traditions.
To capture those festive flavours, we cook the joint in a whole bottle of mulled wine together with Christmas spices, then finish with a honey glaze.
It's perfect for a Boxing Day buffet, seasonal sandwiches, or adding to a pie with left over turkey.
Ingredients
- 3kg gammon ham joint
- 1 onion (peeled and quartered)
- 1 bottle mulled wine
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 nutmeg (halved)
- 6 whole cloves
- 6 whole peppercorns
- 2 tbsp runny honey
Directions
- Place the ham joint in a large, lidded pot. Tuck the onion quarters around the meat. Pour over the mulled wine then top up with water so the meat is at least 3/4 ‘s covered with liquid.
- Add the spices to the pot, cover, then bring to the boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 3 ¼ hours - turning the ham over half way through the cooking time.
- After 3 ¼ hours, heat the oven to 200C/180Fan/Gas 6.
- Transfer the ham onto a foil lined baking tray. Remove most of the thick layer of fat - leaving a thin layer to score with a crisscross pattern if desired.
- Spread the honey over the top of the ham to form a glaze.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the ham is browned.
- Leave the Mulled Wine Christmas Ham to cool completely, then wrap in foil and store in the fridge.

My Christmas Spiced Pear Chutney recipe is the perfect accompaniment to the Mulled Wine Christmas Ham. Both making a fabulous addition to the festive buffet table.
I also use some of the ham, together with leftover turkey, to make a seasonal version of my Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie recipe.
